About Me
Emily Ellison, MS, LMHC
My name is Emily Ellison and I am a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I graduated from Western Washington University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Human Services. I then received my master’s degree in 2014 from Capella University in Mental Health Counseling. I worked at community mental health agency as a clinician for over 5 years. In 2017 I went back to school at Spokane Falls Community College to take all of the courses required in order to receive the chemical dependency education.
I have a somewhat eclectic theoretical style that I practice with clients in session. First and foremost I use a Person-Centered style of counseling. This means that I let the client take the lead in counseling and work really hard to build the best therapeutic relationship possible. I also have extensive experience in working with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) both in individual sessions and as a group facilitator. In addition, I use other techniques such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), talk therapy, art therapy, psychoeducation, and utilizing workbooks for various disorders.
Since I have worked in community health for several years I have experience working with adults with most of the disorders recognized in the DSM-5 including but not limited to: mood disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD/complex trauma, eating disorders, LGBT/gender Dysphoria, and substance use disorders among others. I work primarily with adults. I have additional experience in working with life stressors, adjustment disorders, identity issues, culturally sensitive topics, grief/loss, family issues, and interpersonal relationships.
My goal in working with clients is to help them work through their problems, stabilize their moods, learn new coping skills, become more knowledgeable about their mental health and diagnoses, and provide support throughout the therapeutic process.
Outside of the office I truly enjoy spending quality time with my family. I am voracious reader of many genres and I enjoy discussing books and literature. Spending time with my therapy cat, Chasey is always fun! I am known to be friendly and a generally laid back kind of person. I hope to make the therapy process as comfortable for clients as possible. If you have any further questions about me or my practice please feel free to use the “Contact” form on the last page of this site to contact me or shoot me any questions.
